Review: A Secret Princess by Margaret Stohl and Melissa de la Cruz

A Secret Princess A Secret Princess by Margaret Stohl
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received this free eARC novel from Edelweiss.  This is my honest review.

I grew up watching The Secret Garden and A Little Princess all of the time - to the point where the storylines got crossed in my own head because I loved them both so very much.  And that was a concern for me going into this book, because my expectations were HIGH and perhaps unrealistic.

Don't get me wrong, this book is great!  I just wanted more of...something... something I can't quite put my finger on.  I loved seeing the three main characters together: Sara, Mary and Cedric.  And I loved how the authors not only weaved the original stories together, but that they added culture and history and something to connect readers of all ethnicities together.  But there were moments I felt like the story jumped from one place to another with no real guidelines on why the sudden change.  And there were just enough differences to throw me for a loop out of the original two stories, but once I got used to that, I actually enjoyed them for what they are.

The best part that 100% threw me?  The very end, when they meet again, and Mary's special guest person - she definitely surprised me and I love how that got tied together so smoothly!

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this mash-up, but now I'm feeling a huge urge to go to the originals again and get immersed back into my childhood.  I'm very glad I got the chance to read this novel!
